Taking your travel agency online: what to look for in a booking platform

Phone and WhatsApp bookings built many agencies — but they cap growth. These are the questions to ask before choosing a branded storefront.

Many successful travel agencies across Nigeria and West Africa were built on phone calls, WhatsApp messages and personal relationships. Those relationships are still the heart of the business — but as an agency grows, taking every booking by hand starts to limit how many customers it can serve.

Why manual bookings eventually cap growth

When every booking runs through a conversation, the agency can only sell as fast as its team can reply. Customers who message late at night wait until morning. Prices quoted in a chat are hard to track. Commissions are reconciled by hand at the end of the month. None of this is a problem at a small scale, but each one becomes a bottleneck as demand grows.

A branded online storefront does not replace the personal service that built your reputation. It handles the routine part of the sale — searching, comparing and booking — so your team can spend its time on the customers and trips that genuinely need a human touch.

1. Start with what your customers already buy

The right platform is the one that sells what your customers ask you for today. Before comparing features, list your most common requests and check that each is covered:

  • Flights — the core of most agencies’ revenue, so search and booking need to be reliable.
  • Visa consultations — often the reason customers choose an agent rather than booking alone.
  • Hotels — useful for packaging a complete trip and increasing the value of each booking.
  • Car rentals — a natural add-on for business travellers and families.

If a platform is strong in one area but missing another your customers rely on, you may end up running two systems side by side — which brings back the manual work you were trying to remove.

2. Keep your brand front and centre

Your customers trust your agency, not a software provider. A good platform lets you trade under your own name, logo and web address so that the experience feels like an extension of the service they already know. Ask whether the storefront can run on your own domain, how much of the design you can adapt, and whether confirmation emails and documents carry your branding.

Technology should make your agency look bigger and work faster — without making it look like someone else’s business.

3. Pricing and commissions you control

Margins in travel are often slim, so visibility matters. Look for a platform that lets you set your own markups and commission structure, and that tracks what you have earned automatically rather than leaving you to reconcile spreadsheets. If you run several branches or work with independent agents, check that each can be managed separately while you keep an overview of the whole business.

4. Setup, training and ongoing support

The first weeks after launch decide whether a new platform becomes part of daily life or quietly falls out of use. Ask how long setup typically takes, what help is available while you configure your storefront, and who you can speak to when a customer has a problem with a booking. A named account manager, or at least a clear support route, is worth more than a long feature list.

A short checklist before you choose

  • Does it sell the products my customers ask for most often?
  • Can it run under my agency’s name, logo and domain?
  • Can I set my own pricing, and are commissions tracked for me?
  • Will it work for my size of agency today — and as I add branches or agents?
  • Who helps me during setup, and who do I call when something goes wrong?
  • What does it cost, and are the terms clear before I subscribe?

The Alpha Travels platform was built for exactly this step: a multi-tenant B2B platform that gives agencies their own branded storefront for flights, visas, hotels and car rentals, with commissions tracked automatically. To see whether it fits your agency, book a consultation.
